The success of The Division has given Ubisoft another number one in America, but March was also surprisingly good for the Wii U.
For the second month in a row the number one selling game in the US was from Ubisoft, as The Division had the best launch month of any Tom Clancy title – up 40 per cent from 2008’s Rainbow Six: Vegas 2.
Since Far Cry Primal was number one the previous month, and was still number two in March, that made Ubisoft the number one publisher for the first quarter of 2016 – with sales up 130 per cent.
Nintendo also had a good month, with two new Wii U titles in the top 10. Zelda: Twilight Princess HD did especially well at number three, although coming out at the beginning of the month it had longer in the charts than many other titles.
The release of Star Fox Zero this month is the last major Wii U title with a confirmed release date, leaving only the new Zelda title beyond that.
It’s assumed that the new NX console will be released at the end of the year, or early 2017, although it’s unclear exactly what the new format is and whether it will also replace the aging 3DS.
According to chart trackers NPD, sales of portable hardware in March had a bigger decline than even last gen home consoles – which dropped by 79 per cent compared to this time last year.
In terms of current gen hardware sales the only information revealed is that the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling console of the month.
Instead of sales Microsoft chose to reveal that the number of hours people spent playing on the Xbox One had increased 89 per cent compared to last year. They also highlighted the success of Killer Instinct: Season 3, which had a record peak of 6 million unique players.
