Cast into the desolate and war-torn land of Ravenika, Kaz must wage peace between fierce battling brother kings to find his way back home.
The Foreigner is an original graphic novel written and illustrated by Kensuke Okabayashi, professional illustrator and published author. Kensuke has been working on The Foreigner since 2010, and the project has grown to be a two-volume graphic novel that follows Kaz’s adventure as he struggles against robots, evil fairies, and three embattled royal families to save his wife and return home to Brooklyn.
A once peaceful but now war-torn world, Ravenika is an alternate universe ripped apart by three brother kings battling for each other’s land, riches, and power. In an attempt to save his abducted wife, Kaz, a socially dysfunctional Brooklynite, is mysteriously transported to this desolate and dangerous world where he must restore peace among these familial foes if he ever hopes to return home.
Centuries ago, a massive explosion in the southern hemisphere of Ravenika rendered all but the northernmost sector uninhabitable. The cause of the explosion has always been shrouded in mystery, and while there have been many theories, the actual cause has never been determined.
The atmosphere, now filled with ash, poisoned much of Ravenika. Those who survived have mutated to adapt to the toxic environment. King Acedia rules Vlansgaard, the northern kingdom, is well protected by his indestructible royal air force. King Ira oversees the eastern region, backed by his fiercely loyal half-breed comrades. Finally, King Superbia reigns the west, armed with a terrifying cyborg army.
The concepts and imagery of The Foreigner originally came to me in a dream five years ago. Shortly afterwards, I self-published the first issue, which garnered the attention of local press.
The Foreigner takes place on the battleground of Ravenika where the conflict is both physical and other worldly for Kaz and these royal families. Inspired by Timothy Keller’s sermon series on the seven deadly sins, each of the main characters is afflicted with one of the seven deadly sins that brings them to the brink of death and redemption.

My goal is to raise $10,000 to cover the costs of printing Volume 1 of The Foreigner. This 128-page book will be printed in the United States in full color on high-quality paper. Seventy-five percent of the budget will be used to finance the actual printing and shipping of the books. The remainder will cover labor, fees, production, and shipment of the rewards.
The writing for The Foreigner is complete and the illustration and lettering is almost done, so you won’t have to wait very long for your copy to arrive. I anticipate that The Foreigner, Volume 1 will be off press in late fall. Because my printer is located here in the United States, I aim to ship final products and rewards in time for the 2016 holiday season.
I’ve got so many exciting product rewards lined up for my backers! Stretch goals will be focused around adding more pages, increasing the physical dimension size of The Foreigner, as well as producing a mini sketchbook about The Foreigner concept art (a Kickstarter exclusive).
I plan on posting updates about the add-on details, which will include the opportunity to upgrade to a hardcover copy, as we get closer to the goal. Trust me, you won’t want to miss out on these!
