Club Diamond - a new stagework by Nikki Appino/Saori Tsukada

Club Diamond has just been selected to be part of the Sundance Theater-Makers Residency. From there the show will travel to the Days and Nights Festival in California followed by a run in New York City.

It is the story of a young woman traveling alone from Tokyo to New York City to be a star using an original silent film, illustration and live action. We have finished the silent film and are raising funds to complete the live action and stage design for Club Diamond. Your contribution would go directly and immediately to:

1) Materials budgets for the set, costumes and props to create our classy, low-fi world.

2) Hire a Production Designer to help realize a sleek, smart design that can be packed in a suitcase so we can come to a town near you.

3) Buy a projector, screen + a good microphone for the live Foley (sound effects for the film).

4) Give Composer Tim Fain the big fat fee he deserves and pay a fine local musician to be part of the Philadelphia rehearsals.

5) Pay for the ongoing transportation, communication and rehearsal costs for our long distance collaboration.

Club Diamond is collaboration between Saori Tsukada, Japanese theater artist and Nikki Appino, American theatre and filmmaker. It began in 2013 when we decided to build a theatre piece based on our shared love for the Western and Japanese tradition of silent film. Through 2013 we met and developed the basic narrative and greater themes for the piece. A simple story of a young woman coming to the big city to find fame and fortune will be played out through different characters on stage (all played by Saori) using an original silent film and the traditional Japanese performance techniques of Benshi, (a Japanese orator for silent film) and Kamishibia (paper-play). In Club Diamond these characters will provide contradictory and self-serving versions of the same events, and each medium; live performance, silent film and paper-play, will tell the “same story” but try to win the audience over using charm, misappropriation, and seduction.

In the months that followed, composer and internationally recognized violinist, Tim Fain and Guggenheim fellow and cinematographer Cathy Lee Crane came on board to help create our short, black and white, 16mm silent film.

In October of 2014, a small 12-minute sample of the film and live elements was performed at the venue JACK, in Brooklyn. Thirty minutes of the work in development was presented at the Public Theatre as part of Under the Radar Festival’s INCOMING series in January of 2016.

We've just been invited to the Sundance Theater-Makers Residency this June and to present the full work at The Days and Nights Festival in California in September. Club Diamond is also under consideration for a major theater festival in New York City in 2017, which would give us significant exposure for international touring possibilities. To date we have created half the piece with cardboard, tape and volunteer energy – with these incredible opportunities just around the corner, we need to fully realize our vision of Club Diamond.

In addition to the above expenses, we would love to have more studio time to record the score, to enhance the post production work on the film, hire a dramaturge, and pay a designer to help with specialized props - any money raised above our target amount would go here.

Thanks to The Days and Nights Festival your contribution is tax deductible.

Our target is to raise $11,900. with this kickstarter campaign. Every dollar pledged here will help us finish Club Diamond and bring it to a town near you.

Thank you so much!  Nikki&Saori

All the storyboards and illustrations that are part of Club Diamond were created by Saori...

...as are the beautiful kamishibai drawings.

These are just some of the rewards that await you...

Thank you again for considering Club Diamond.
