Nintendo has downplayed reports that it intends to cease production of Wii U this year, noting that production will continue "next quarter and thereafter".
Nikkei sources had stated that production on some Wii U components had already stopped, with the console to end production entirely by the year end. The development of Wii U titles is not expected to end so soon, however, in order to ensure excess Wii U stock can be cleared even when the NX arrives.
A Nintendo spokesperson told Japanese publication IT Media: "This isn't an announcement from our company. From the next quarter and thereafter as well, production is scheduled to continue."
With NX expected to hit stores this holiday, it would make sense for Wii U production to end, especially given the platform has shown little sign it could mount a recovery at this late stage.
