The time for rejoicing is now, with news that there will be four, not three, Avatar sequels coming our way by 2023.
News of the extra sequel – we had previously believed there to be only three – comes direct from Avatar creator James Cameron.
"We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic project, making four epic films, each of which stands alone but together forms a complete saga," Cameron said.
Cameron says the "game plan" is to launch films in 2018, then at Christmas-time in 2020, 2022 and 2023.
"So far, what I am seeing in pure imagination is far beyond the first film," Cameron said, noting that those who have seen the initial concepts have been left "speechless".
"Trust me, these are films that were designed to be seen in theatres and on the big screen first," he said.
Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie of all time, with a worldwide box office of $2,788 billion, a figure not even Star Wars: The Force Awakens could get close to.
