Naomi Watts becomes latest A-lister on the Netflix train with new thriller series

Netflix has been on the move, snagging not only a long list of hot new original series, but also a growing number of A-list actors to star in them. The latest on the list is Naomi Watts, who has been confirmed to star in the upcoming psychological thriller Gypsy.

Written by Lisa Rubin, Gypsy will consist of 10 hour-long episodes starring Watts as therapist Jean Holloway, who begins to develop dangerous personal relationships entangled with her patients. Not much else is known about the plot at present, but it appears Watts will get herself into some serious trouble by interfering in her patients lives.

The team behind the project is quite a busy one. In addition to penning these 10 episodes, Rubin is also working on adapting I Was Here for New Line, a best-selling novel by Gayle Forman; as well as the novel Food Whore, which she’s adapting for DreamWorks. Rubin will also serve as executive producer, alongside Liza Chasin, Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Andrew Stearn, and Watts herself. Fifty Shades of Grey’s Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the first two episodes.

Watts, meanwhile, can most recently be seen in the movie Demolition, co-starring alongside Jake Gyllenhaal. Her other recent projects include About Ray with Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning; Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees with Matthew McConaughey; Colin Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry; and the psychological thriller Shut In. She’ll appear next year on the big screen in The Glass Castle with Brie Larson.

Gypsy will join other Netflix original series produced by Universal Television, including Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Master of None. Working Title TV, the television division of Working Title Films and a joint-venture with NBC Universal International Studios, received its most recent accolades for the Oscar-winning film The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander.

Gypsy is set to premiere some time in 2017.
