Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger is coming to the small screen

Freeform and Marvel plan on teaming up to bring Cloak and Dagger to the small screen. The network, formerly known as ABC Family, announced plans today to bring Tyrone Johnson and Tandy Bowen into the realm of live action heroes.

In the comics, Ty and Tandy are actually mutants who also happen to be runaways. Ty can turn his cloak into a portal to the dark dimension, which makes him able to teleport himself and others, while Tandy creates light daggers. The duo first appeared in 1982’s Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #64 before earning their own self-titled series and become favorite recurring characters.

For the purposes of the Freeform series, Cloak and Dagger will also develop a romantic relationship of some sort. Whether it’s full-on as the series kicks off, or more of a “will they, won’t they?” situation remains to be seen. Along those same lines, a writer is still being looked for to work on the pilot.

This news might sound a bit strange, as both ABC and Netflix seem to be the go-to places when it comes to making Marvel TV shows work. But, Freeform — also owned by Disney, like Marvel and ABC — also plays home to Shadowhunters, a young-skewing fantasy drama based on the Mortal Instruments books. In other words, when it comes to sci-fi or fantasy shows aimed at the 14-to-34-year-old crowd, Freeform is the place to be.

Given the fact that Fox has the market cornered on Marvel’s merry mutants, it will be interesting to see how the show’s creators not only explain the characters’ powers, but also which other well known Marvel characters might appear.
